Maitreya, the compassionate Bodhisattva and the future Buddha, is regarded as the successor to Shakyamuni Buddha. He is destined to descend to our world and impart the teachings of pure dharma. Currently, Maitreya resides as a Bodhisattva in the Tuṣita Heaven, the same celestial abode where Gautama Buddha resided prior to his birth on Earth.
Various depictions of Maitreya showcase different poses and gestures. In this particular thangka painting, Maitreya is portrayed seated on a throne in a common posture, with extended legs and both feet resting on the ground. His complexion radiates a yellow-gold hue, and his two hands are positioned in front of his heart, forming the Dharma Teaching mudra. Maitreya grasps the stems of two utpala (blue lotus) flowers, symbolizing their blossoming nature. On the right side, he holds a water flask, while on the left, he cradles a Dharma wheel.
Maitreya adorns himself with an assortment of jewels, including a crown, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. He drapes silk scarves and wears vibrant robes adorned with ornate gold embellishments.
