Yellow kalchakra Thangka
The Kalachakra mandala shown here is a two-dimensional depiction of an actual multi-leveled structure, shaped like a pyramid. Each level of the mandala corresponds both to a physical part of this divine palace and to a quality of the enlightened mind. The outermost square—the first and lowest level—symbolizes the enlightened body and its activities. The second level represents enlightened speech, the third corresponds to the enlightened mind, and the innermost and highest level symbolizes fully awakened wisdom.
At the pinnacle of the mandala stands the deity Kalachakra, in union with his consort Vishvamata. Kalachakra—depicted here with a blue body, multiple arms, legs, and faces—is the central figure practitioners identify with during Kalachakra Tantra practice.
This thangka is traditionally framed with a silk brocade border.
